How Cardinal Success Can Shift Your Definition of Enough

Dan Colburn |

One of the strange things about enough is how often it moves.

An income or net worth figure that would have felt like wild abundance to your twenty five year old self feels merely adequate to your forty five year old self. The number you would have called enough a decade ago, if you had named one then, would feel quaint today.

You see this all the time inside Cardinal. Compensation grows. Bonuses grow. RSUs vest. Leadership roles expand. And as each milestone arrives, the definition of enough quietly drifts upward to match it.

Researchers call it hedonic adaptation. Most people at Cardinal describe it as the way life seems to keep getting more expensive even though they keep earning more.

Some of that drift is natural. You work hard. You take on more responsibility. You want to enjoy the life you have built. But the drift is also part of the problem.

Because if your number keeps moving forever upward, you never arrive at enough. You hit the next milestone and maybe feel a moment of satisfaction, but it fades quickly. The horizon moves again. The target shifts. The sense of arrival never quite lands.

It is almost like walking toward the horizon. It seems like it should get closer, but it never actually does.

The way out is not earning more or faster. It is defining enough once, committing to a specific number, and refusing to let the definition drift just because your circumstances have changed.

That commitment is harder than it sounds. It is especially hard inside a company where your peers keep upgrading their lives around you. And social media makes the one percent of the one percent look normal and attainable. Even when it is not.

Your own mind will also generate reasons why the number you named last year was probably too low. After all, you have earned it. You have taken on more. You have done more.

But the Cardinal clients I have watched live the freest financial lives are the ones who committed to a number and abided by it. Maybe not perfectly or without occasional adjustment, but fundamentally. They put a stake in the ground. They named what enough meant for them. And they stopped letting the horizon drift endlessly away.

That stake in the ground is what makes enough a real possibility rather than an ever moving target.
